The Indian American community in the tri-state New York area has a population of about 500,000 people. It is a composite group with older immigrants from 1960s to the recently arrived and the second and third generation citizens of Indian origin. Adding Indo-Caribbeans, the PIO community will swell to 700,000 people in the tr-state area. As the community grows, the need for social services also increases. Many language-based organizations and religious groups (temples, churches, gurudwaras and mosques) have some services to their members. Certain groups have been providing services to women who needed help. Another group has been providing service to those addicted with alcohol and drugs. However, as an Indian American community set up, we have been able to provide only limited services. We have not reached to the level of other ethnic groups who have been providing services to their communities.
The purpose of this day-long conference is to make an evaluation of currently available services, identify gaps and develop a strategy to provided needed services to the community.
