ANAND SHARMA TO OPEN GOPIO CONFERENCE
IN NEW DELHI
Commerce and Industry Minister Anand
Sharma will inaugurate the GOPIO International Conference in New Delhi
on 6th January 2010.
The Minister’s attendance was announced
and warmly welcomed by Lord Diljit Rana, President of GOPIO International,
as “an immensely important endorsement” of the organisation’s
work on behalf of the India Diaspora.
Lord Rana said: “Mr Sharma’s decision
to inaugurate our conference is a tremendous boost for GOPIO International
and is a further example of his longstanding interest in and support
for the organisation.
“I have had an opportunity to discuss
with him a number of important issues affecting India people living
and working abroad and appreciate greatly his advice, guidance and overall
support.
“He has a great global vision for India
and a commitment to ensure the nation’s long-term development.
“Mr Sharma’s presence at the conference
will enable us to take forward some of the suggestions that have been
made about how GOPIO members can assist India’s continuing economic
development particularly in areas such as enterprise, investment and
trade.
“By attending our conference Mr Sharma
has followed with positive action the recent by Prime Minister Dr Manmohan
Singh to the Diaspora to become more closely involved in the nation’s
development.
“We are keen to work with him on initiatives
that will lead to greater opportunities for people throughout India
to share in the benefits of India’s emergence as a genuinely global
economic power,” added Lord Rana.
Mr Sharma was appointed Minister for
Commerce and Industry in May 2009. A lawyer by profession, Mr Sharma
was previously Minister of State at the Ministry of External Affairs.
In this role he was also responsible for Information and Broadcasting.”
Lord Rana was born at Sanghol in Punjab
and is now a successful businessman in Northern Ireland, where he owns
the UK region’s biggest hotel chain and is also a major property developer.
