GOPIO HEALTH COUNCIL TO RECOGNIZE FIVE AT THE HEALTH SUMMIT | |
Focus on Diabetes, Cardiovascular Health, and Stress Management + Free Children's Program
The Health Council of Global Organization of People of Indian Origin (GOPIO) (www.gopiohealth.net), together with GOPIO chapters of Connecticut, New York, New Jersey, Long Island, Upper New York and several partner organizations will honor five healthcare professionals/organizations, namely, Ms Rita Batheja, Dr. Suresh Khanna, Dr. Jatin Shah, SATHI and SEVAK Project during its inaugural Health Summit on November 12 -14 at the Crowne Plaza Hotel LaGuardia, East Elmhurst, New York. Details on the awardees are included at the end of this document. GOPIO is a non-profit, non-partisan and secular community service global organization working for the well-being of people of Indian origin. GOPIO was founded in New York in 1989 and has over 70 chapters worldwide.
The three-day summit will kick-off on Friday, November 12, 2010, from 7:00 - 10:30 PM. with an opening reception, and opening comments by Sangeeta Ahuja and Dr Vivian Rambihar, who will explain why GOPIO is embarking on this initiative, to respond to a health crisis across the Indian disapora, and to invite everyone to be part of helping to improve the health, wellbeing and future of PIO's globally. This would be followed by summit inauguration, awards, dinner and music On Saturday, November 13, 2010 from 9:00 - 5:00 PM, a panel of distinguished speakers and health practitioners will share their expertise on Disease Prevention & Health Management. The day conference will include interactive sessions with audience participation with breaks for exercise and meditation. The target audience will comprise of people of Indian Origin (PIOs) from around the world with a majority from the Tri-State area who are committed to healthier living, and eager to learn more about the products and services offered by the diverse set of holistic healthcare providers. The evening program on Saturday, November 13, 2010 from 7:00 - 10:00 PM will include a talk on Oral Health, speaker recognitions, dinner and music. On Sunday, November 14, 2010 from 10:00 - 12 noon. A free event will be offered on children's health and wellness to celebrate the occasion of "India's Children's Day" to mark the birthday of late Pandit Jawaharlal "Chacha" Nehru. This special health fair for children will include education on oral health as well as obesity amongst children within an entertainment medium. A health lunch as well as game prizes and take home goodies will be offered to all attendees. Concurrently, on Sunday, November 14, 2010 from 9:00 - 12:00 Noon. there will be optional health workshops for adults on alternative health practices including a Group Healing session with Master Del Pe.

GOPIO HEALTH COUNCIL 2010 AWARD RECIPIENTS
Ms. Rita Kashi Batheja
Ms. Rita Batheja is a New York based registered dietitian and integrative nutritionist who utilizes complementary therapies and principles of functional medicine when dealing with pediatrics through geriatrics age group patients. She is the founder of the Indian American Dietetic Association and serves on the American Dietetic Association (ADA) Legislative State Issues Task Force on Food and Nutrition. She is the Co-Chair, author and reviewer of the American Association of Physicians of Indian Origin (AAPI) book "AAPI's guide to Nutrition, Health and Diabetes".
Rita has served on the board of several Indian community organizations and has organized community health expos. She is the New York State Coordinator of the Vegetarian Nutrition Dietetic Practice Group (DPG) of ADA, and has received many awards from the Health Care food Administrators Association of Greater New York, Vegetarian Nutrition DPG of ADA, Point of Life foundation, and American Dietetic Association.
Dr. Suresh Khanna
Dr. Suresh Khanna is a Westchester, New York based physician who is making a difference in our community through charity care and social service. He is a trustee of Hindu temple of Tristate and has contributed to various temple activities in Westchester and New York. He is an active member of the India Center in Westchester, and has raised funds for the Kargil War Widows, Gujarat Earth Quake victims, and for the education of the tribal and rural poor.
Dr. Jatin Shah
Dr. Jatin Shah is Chair of the dept. of head and neck Surgery at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, whose passion is patient care, surgical education and research. He is trying to make a difference in the community through social service. He provides consultations and direct surgical care to some indigenous patients, and made various philanthropic contributions. He has conducted numerous courses and conferences in India, and trains physicians of Indian origin who come to his institution for paid fellowships.
SATHI
South Asian Total Health Initiative (SATHI) is a community outreach education and research initiative at the UMDNJ-Robert Wood Johnson Medical School with the mission to address health disparities and to improve the delivery of culturally competent health care to South Asians. SATHI collects research-based data on factors that influence healthcare decisions affecting people of South Asian origin, including family dynamics, patients' health beliefs and socioeconomic concerns. In addition to research, SATHI seeks to educate, engage and empower the South Asian community to promote wellness and improve health outcomes.
The program has been developed under the leadership of Dr. Sunanda Gaur, professor of pediatrics and Dr. Naveen Mehrotra, associate clinical professor of pediatrics, in collaboration with Dr. Robert C. Like, professor and director of the Center for Healthy Families and Cultural Diversity in the Department of Family Medicine which is dedicated to leadership, advocacy, and excellence in promoting culturally-responsive, quality health care for diverse populations. Other members of SATHI's advisory board include: Dr. Poonam Alaigh, Dr. Geetha Ghai, Ms. Jigna Rao, and State Assemblyman Upendra Chivukula.
SEVAK
In 2007, the American Association of Physicians of Indian Origin (AAPI) found that rural villages in Gujarat had high prevalence of diabetes and hypertension, and that access to care and preventive care was a huge problem, and they came up with the SEVAK project to address the shortfalls. The project identifies bright individuals with medical and or non-medical backgrounds from every village of 1000-1500 population. These individuals undergo training to become a "Sevak". The Sevaks screen the village for diabetes, hypertension, monitor high risk population for various diseases and monitors patients with chronic disease who are on treatment, in addition to providing healthy lifestyle education and preventive care.
The principal coordinators for the project are Thakor G. Patel, MD, (Chair), Hemant Patel, MD(Co-Chair), Ranjita Misra, PhD (Co-Chair), Padmini Balagopal, PhD, Ashish Joshi, MD (US), Dean (Ret) Kamal Pathak, MD, Dean Amrit Leuva, MD, Baroda Medical College, Mr. Kirti D. Patel, Bhartiya Seva Samaj and Bina Sengar, PhD., and Sudarshan Foundation Trust. The program is managed by Texas A & M University in partnership with the American Association of Physicians of Indian Origin, and Baroda Medical College, AAPI (NY-NJ). Dr. Enas A. Enas:

His book, "How to Beat the Heart Disease Epidemic among South Asians ?A Prevention and Management Guide for Asian Indians and their Doctors" has clearly and succinctly elucidated the enigma of the excess burden of heart disease in young Indians around the globe and the proactive measures you must take to avoid falling a victim. He has received numerous awards and commendations for his pioneering research including one of America's Top Physicians (in 2003) and one of Top Cardiologists (in 2009) by the Consumer Research Council of America.

Dr. Wahida Karmally: Nutrition
Dr. Wahida Karmally is Director of Nutrition in the Irving Institute for Clinical and Translational Research; Associate Research Scientist and Lecturer in Dentistry at Columbia University in New York. Dr. Karmally earned her doctor of public health in Health Policy and Management from the Columbia University Mailman School of Public Health. She has been appointed to serve a 3 year term (2008-2010) as a director on the Board of Directors for the American Diabetes Association. She is also a member of Asia Pacific Diabetes Action Council of the American Diabetes Association. She was a national media spokesperson for the American Dietetic Association for 11 years.
Dr. Madhavan Anirudhan: Nutrition Research
Dr. M. Anirudhan is a highly recognized food scientist and management expert. His professional career spans from nuclear chemist, professor of chemistry, corporate director of Sandoz Nutrition and currently the CEO and president of Essen Nutrition Corporation.He has been actively involved in the applied nutrition research over three decades. He headed the diabetic research group of featherweight division of Sandoz in the 1980's and then the obesity research project developing the optifast program. Over the last decade Dr. Anirudhan has built Essen Nutrition as a major supplier of diet and sports nutrition products to supermarket and weight loss companies in USA, Canada, Mexico and Europe.
Dr. Anirudhan is equally involved with the social issues of NRI community. He is the founder chairman of the federation of kerala associations in North America (FOKANA) and served three terms as its President. Also he is one of the founder directors of U.S - India Chamber of commerce - Midwest Inc. and served as director of Chicago Red cross society. He is an investor - director of NORKA-ROOTS, a Kerala government Corporation for the welfare of the non-resident Keralites.
Dr. Muhammed Majeed: Nutraceuticals
Dr. Muhammed Majeed is the Founder of the Sami -Sabinsa group of companies, a research, manufacturing and marketing group, which pioneered the introduction of over fifty standardized botanical extracts of Indian origin to western markets for use in pharmaceuticals, dietary supplements, food products, cosmetics and industrial applications. A native of Kerala who emigrated to the US in 1975, Dr. Majeed received a PhD degree in Industrial Pharmacy from St John's University NY, and headed research and development at pharmaceutical companies including Pfizer and Carter-Wallace before launching Sabinsa Corporation in 1988. Winning awards for research, developing export markets, and fostering scientific excellence; with seven international corporate offices, state of the art manufacturing and research facilities, and medicinal plant cultivation efforts worldwide, the group now has over 1000 employees. Recent personal recognitions for Dr. Majeed include the Ellis Island Medal of Honor, and Distinguished Alumni Award (Long Island University).
Dr. Prathibha Shah: Ayurveda
Pratibha Shah holds a Post Graduate degree in Ayurveda, the ancient holistic Indian system of Medicine. She has been practicing Ayurveda for more than 20 years and is an invited speaker at Ayurvedic Events. Presently, she is on the Board of several leading Ayurvedic organizations in the US and is working towards promotion, propagation as well as integration of Ayurveda with mainstream medicine, globally. With the aim of providing a wider platform for benefits from Ayurvedic principles of healing, she is currently pursuing Masters in Public Health, International Health, at Boston University School of Public Health.
Dr. Aparna Bapat: Ayurveda
Dr. Aparna Bapat is an Ayurvedic consultant, practicing and teaching Ayurveda in USA since last 12 years. She has successfully helped thousands of people using Ayurvedic wisdom of healing. Dr. Bapat is also an accomplished teacher and has been teaching Ayurveda in various Ayurveda and Medical colleges in the world. She has developed a product line 'Ayurspirit' to introduce authentic Ayurvedic herbal products. She is presently practicing in New York and Florida.
Dr. Alex Zachariah: Diabetes/Obesity
Dr. Alex Zachariah received his Medical Oncology training as a Special Clinical Fellow of Eli Lilly in the Indiana University Medical Center in Indianapolis from 1969 to 1972 and returned to establish the pioneering medical oncology work in North India from 1973 onwards. Dr. Alex received from President of India, Mr. R.Venkataraman, the B.C. Roy Research Award in 1989.
Currently, Prof. Emeritus Alex R Zachariah MD and Prof. Emeritus Prema Zachariah MD are Research Associates of PHIRE (Public Health Institute for Research in Excellence) of Champaign-Urbana Public Health District in Illinois. Prior to that Dr. Alex was the Medical Director of Provena United Samaritan Medical Center in Danville, Illinois. Formerly he was the Dean of Christian Medical College in Ludhiana, India.
Dr. Steven Horowitz:Integrative Cardiology
Steven F. Horowitz M.D. is a graduate of New York Medical College and did his Medical Residency at Beth Israel Medical Center in New York City. He did his Cardiology Residency and Research Fellowship at Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York City. He then returned to Beth Israel as Chief of Cardiology and Director of the Fellowship Program. Since 2002, Dr. Horowitz has served as Cardiology Chief at Stamford Hospital in Connecticut, a major teaching affiliate of Columbia College of Physicians and Surgeons in New York City. Dr. Horowitz's interests have focused on nuclear imaging, probability analysis and integrative cardiology for the prevention and treatment of coronary artery disease. In 2007, Dr. Horowitz received the Planetree Life Time Achievement Award as a pioneer of patient-centered care and in 2009 opened the Center for Integrative Medicine and Wellness at Stamford Hospital
Dr. Sridhar Nambi: Diabetes
Dr Sridhar Nambi graduated from Gandhi Medical College, Hyderabad, India. He is Co-Chair, Department of Endocrinology at St. Barnabas Medical Center, Livingston, N J. Dr. Nambi specializes in Endocrinology, Diabetes & Metabolism and is also experienced in Adrenal Gland Diseases, Genetic testing, Cancer and Metabolic diseases. He has received several awards and honors and has been practicing medicine for over 25 years. He is a much sough after speaker who delivers talks on Diabetes related topics.
Dr. Bhaswati Bhattacharya: Holistic Medicine
Dr. Bhaswati Bhattacharya, MD, practices and teaches holistic medicine and ayurveda, dividing her time between New York City and Calcutta based at The Dinacharya Institute. She is a licensed, board-certified physician, scientist and clinical assistant professor of family medicine at Weill-Cornell Medical College. In addition to being trained in ayurveda by apprenticeship, called gurukala, she has degrees in pharmacology, neuroscience, international public health, medicine, nutrition and ayurveda from universities including Penn, Harvard, and Columbia. Her work has been featured in a documentary called Healers: Journey into Ayurveda, worldwide on The Discovery Channel since July 2003. She serves as Director of the Center of CAM at Wyckoff Heights Medical Center in New York and as Director of Research for the hospital. Bhaswati teaches ayurveda at The Dinacharya Institute in New York and has almost 30 years' experience lecturing about ayurveda, CAM, health and medicine around the world.
Dr. Shankar Iyer: Oral Health
Dr. Shankar Iyer graduated with a Post Graduate Degree in Prosthodontics from University of Mumbai, India in 1989. He completed an Implant Fellowship in New York and Graduated from New York University College of Dentistry. He currently teaches at UMDNJ in the department of Prosthodontics to oversee "Implant Fellowship Programs". He is also on the faculty at NYU College of Dentistry. He spends most of his time conducting courses on Dental Implants and Oral Rehabilitation and has been teaching in Abu Dhabi, Iran, Russia, Malayisia, Korea and India. Dr. Iyer is the course director of the prestigious AAID Implant Maxicourse Asia where he routinely visits MADCH, New Delhi. In the U.S., besides maintaining a private practice, he teaches at UNLV, Las Vegas, UMDNJ, Loma Linda University, AGD - Toronto, and University of Oregon health Sciences. He was awarded fellowships in several professional organizations. Serving as the Editor in Chief for the International Journal of Clinical Implant Dentistry, Dr. Iyer introduced the first DVD journal ever to be published in Dentistry.
Dr. Ranjita Misra: Public Health
Dr. Ranjita Misra is a well known health disparity researcher that combines clinical and non-clinical factors to investigate the prevalence of Diabetes and related complications in multi-ethnic populations. She is recognized for her investigations in epidemiological and intervention studies and for combining public health models of inquiry. She is the PI of the Diabetes among Indian Americans (DIA) study that investigated prevalence of diabetes and risk factors among the Indian Diaspora in rural Indians, urban Indians and Immigrant Indians in the US. She has also implemented several community and clinical based Diabetes and Nutrition Education Programs that are literacy and culturally appropriate. In recognition of her outstanding research, teaching and public service activities, she has received numerous awards.
Dr. Binoy K. Singh: Clinical Business Development
Dr. Binoy Singh is an Assistant Professor of Medicine at Columbia University and is currently serving as Director of Clinical Business Development for Columbia University College of Physician and Surgeons. He is also "Cardiology Attending" with the Center for Interventional Vascular Therapy at Columbia University Medical Center. He completed my bachelor's degree in Bio-medical Engineering from Boston University Dr. Singh attended Drexel University College of Medicine and completed his residency program at MCP Hahnemann University Hospitals, Philadelphia, PA. He received his postgraduate training in Cardiology at Columbia University and is Board Certified in the areas of Internal Medicine and Cardiology. He is a Fellow of American College of Cardiology .
Surinda Oberai Cavanagh: Ayurveda
Surinda Oberai Cavanagh is renowned in New England for helping many reform their lives through her work at Stoweflake Spa and Wellness Center as a Kripalu Certified Ayurvedic Consultant and Ayurvedic Bodyworker. She began her studies of Ayurveda at the Kripalu School of Ayurveda in Stockbridge, Massachusetts where she studied with world-renowned Ayurvedic masters such as Dr. Vasant Lad, Dr. David Frawley, and Dr. John Douillard. She went on to complete the Advanced Course for Practitioners in Faridabad, India at the Jiva Institute with Dr. Partap Chauhan.
Lea Kraemer: Yoga
Lea Kraemer, ERYT, IAYT, Founder and Director of PRANA MANDIR Yoga Studio has taught Vinyasa Yoga, Kundalini Yoga, Yoga Therapy, Healing and Meditation for almost two decades. She works privately and in area hospitals and with people who have chronic and life threatening illnesses.

GOPIO CONCLUDES SUCCESSFUL CONFERENCES IN LONDON - OCT. 26-27 | |
The Global Organization of People of Indian Origin (GOPIO) concluded its very successful Conferences held at National Liberal Club, One Whitehall Place in London, UK on October 26-27, 2010. The GOPIO conferences were well attended and produced tremendous positive feedback and interaction among the participants and attendees. President of GOPIO International, Lord Diljit Rana, convened the two major conferences, GOPIO International Annual Conference (26th of October) and the First GOPIO International Women's Council conference in London (on 27th of October).
GOPIO CONFERENCE DEBATES ROLE OF DIASPORA
The theme of the conference was 'The Indian Diaspora's Role in the New Economic World Order'. Delegates from GOPIO chapters worldwide, as well as attendees from various segments of the diaspora, were in London for the two-day conference which was very significant in theme, content and importance. Among the participating chapters represented were USA, Belgium, France, Mauritius, South Africa, Netherlands, Sri Lanka, Trinidad & Tobago & New Zealand. All participating chapters reflected a commitment to build a cohesive and united organisation, a key theme of Lord Rana mentioned in his opening address.
The inaugural & keynote speakers included Nalin Surie, High Commissioner for India to the UK, Abhimanu Kundasamy, High Commissioner for Mauritius to the UK, Speaker of the National Assembly of Mauritius Mr. Kailash Purryag, Her Holiness Anandmurthy Guruma, Lord Navnit Dholakia, Lord Bhikhu Parekh Dr Pritam Singh of the Oxford Brookes University and the former Prime Minister of Trinidad & Tobago, Hon Mr. Basdeo Panday.

Delegates also heard important contributions from Inder Singh, Chairman of GOPIO International, Ashook Ramsaran, Executive Vice president, Thomas Abraham, former GOPIO International chairman, and Raj Loomba, Vice president, GOPIO Europe. Speakers also included Baroness Shreela Flather, Baroness Sandeep Verma, Lord Patel and Lord Desai from the House of Lords, and the US Consul General to Northern Ireland, Ms Kamala Lakhdir.
Lord Rana said: "I am convinced that GOPIO International needs to be active globally in promoting the wellbeing of Indian people everywhere. My objective is to build on the tremendous work carried out by my predecessors and the existing management team. It's time to move GOPIO International onto a higher level". He spoke of the Indian values of respecting all creation, peace & harmony. He continued by commenting about the culture of preservation and cutting out waste and over consumption. He said the solutions of many of today's problems lie in the Indian Culture and the way of life. "The opportunity to move GOPIO International forward faster is now. India is reclaiming its rightful place as a global leader in business, politics, technology, education and society. Our country has gained the respect of governments and people worldwide. We have an opportunity to make an even greater contribution to the wellbeing of our people across the world."

There were 3 sessions that deliberated and discussed various aspects of the theme "The Indian Diaspora's Role in the New Economic World Order".

Session II was chaired by Dr Thomas Abraham- Former Chairman-GOPIO International and Co-Chaired by Rajindre Tewari- GOPIO-The Netherlands. Speakers include: Lord Navneet Dholakia (House of Lords, UK), Mr R.K.Mehrotra CBE (Foresight Ltd, UK), Dr Satish Kumar (Queens University Belfast, Ireland), Dr Shalin Singhal (University of Ulster, Belfast, Ireland) and Prof. M.Nithiyanandan-People of Indian Origin in Sri Lanka.
Session III was chaired by Ashook Ramsaran (Executive Vice President GOPIO International, Guyana-USA) and Co-Chaired by Dr Prabhu Kulkarni (GOPIO Ireland, UK). Speakers include: Dr Pritam Singh (Keynote Speaker - Oxford Brookes University, UK), Baroness Shreela Flather- (House of Lords, UK), Mr Rami Ranger (Sunmark Ltd, UK), Hon. Virendra Sharma (MP, UK) and Hon. Prabakaran Ganesan (Hon Member of Parliament, Sri Lanka).

FIRST INTL. INDIAN DIASPORA WOMEN'S CONFERENCE DEBATES ISSUES OF WOMEN OF INDIAN ORIGIN | |
The first GOPIO International Women's Conference held recently in London emphatically propelled Women of Indian Origin to the centre of the international development stage. Lady Shruti Rana, Chairperson of GOPIO International Women's Council (GIWC), convened the conference.
The proceedings were initiated by Her Holiness Anadmurti Guruma, with the traditional ritual lighting of the lamp and an inspirational invocation. Inaugurating the conference, Hon. Basdeo Panday, former Prime Minister of Trinidad and Tobago spoke passionately about the dire issues concerneing women of Indian origin. Lord Diljit Rana International President of GOPIO, spoke about the Women diaspora. He welcomed the role of GIWC in addressing their needs. Lord Meghnad Desai, (Labour), gave an arousing keynote address on Women's issues. Baroness Sandip Verma Government, Minister for International Development, Women & Equality and our guest of honour, resolved to harness the power of international women's networks to bring about positive and wide-ranging social and economic change.

The GOPIO International Women's Council (GIWC) launched a dazzling array of projects for 2011 encompassing books, films, skills training and health education. In addition the WIO e-group is now set to expand to become a major pivotal and dynamic forum. A tool to promote continued sharing of knowledge, experience and support reaching out to all WIOs, wherever and whoever they may be.
The event also witnessed an historic collaboration through the co-signing of the MOU between two powerful bodies: FICCI Ladies Organisation (FLO) and GIWC. These combined heralds a powerful new dawn: a joint force committed to developing projects and solutions across the full range of issues that affect Women of Indian Origin (WIOs) across the globe. The collaboration aimed at facilitating awareness, education and promoting professional and cultural excellence for personal and socio-economic empowerment.
Delegates to the one-day conference held in London witnessed an impressive array of authoritative speakers from around the globe introduce a range of stimulating and emotive discussions. Discussions centred on the themes of: WIOs and Sustainable development, Legal and marital issues of WIOs, Gender issues in Education, Culture and Health, Women and Industry. The many achievements of WIOs were highlighted as well as raising awareness of the wide-ranging challenges they face. Issues of foeticide, widowhood, forced marriage, domestic violence, dowry and honour killings were debated. In addition the multiple roles of women in education, social and economic development, politics and professional life and the influence of role-models on women to encourage them to make changes in their lives.
Session I
Awards and commemorations GIWC 2010: The first ever annual Shakti Award, was presented to Her Holiness Anadmurti Guruma. This award, recognising great work for Women's Empowerment, wassponsored by Dr Pushpinder Chowdhry, co-chair of GOPIO International Women's Council.
Projects and resolutions for GOPIO International Women's Council 2011:
- To produce the book of True Untold Stories of Women of Indian Origin recounting the many and varied biographies of women from the Indian Diaspora.
- To co-partner to develop a parallel, all-ethnicity, World Women and Wellness project, to cater to Women of all ethnicities and nations. This would work with GIWC for skills training and empowerment of Women of Indian Origin.
- To forge and expand networks to maintain discussions and problem-solving via the GIWCe-group with outreach to at least 1000 PIOs internationally.
- To develop further projects in 2011 under the GIWC-FLO collaboration for the empowerment of women.
- To hold the 2nd GOPIO International Women's Conference - tentatively August 9 and 10, 2011 in South Africa. Theme: 'The Role of Women in Leadership and in Society', with speakers from about 15 countries
- To work towards a film documenting the migration history of Indians from the perspective of a woman's narrative. Talks with Mr Shyam Benegal for directing this film are under way.

Rekha Gupta, MSC (Co-chair GIWC) co-signed for GOPIO and Priya Kingorani (Advocate, Supreme Court of India) co-signed for FICCI. Hon. Basdeo Panday, Former Prime Minister of Trinidad and Tobago, delivered the inaugural Address, and Ashook Ramsaran, Executive Vice President, GOPIO International, delivered the vote of thanks.

Chaired by Lady Shruti Rana (UK) and Co-Chaired by: Rekha Gupta (USA). Keynote speaker was Padma Vibhushan Dr. Sonal Mansingh (Renowned classical dancer and social activist); other speakers included Usha Teji, Eminent Barrister, UK and Ms. Rita Abraham, Entrepreneur, South Africa.
Session II: Theme: Gender Issues in Education, Culture and Health
Chaired by Baroness Shreela Flather -Member, House of Lords, UK. Keynote address by Lord Naren Patel, KT, FRSE, Member, House of Lords, UK. Other speakers included: Kamala Lakhdhir, US Consul General to Northern Ireland (USA); Dr Lakshmi persaud, Celebrated Author and Novelist, Trinidad and Dr Asha Samant, DMD, MDS, BDS, FICD (USA).
Session III: Theme: Women and Industry
Chaired by Mr Mahyendra Utchaanah (GOPIO Mauritius), Co- Chaired by Indy Aujla. Keynote Speaker was Maggie Semple, OBE, FCGI, Chief Executive, The Experience Corps. Speakers included Atul Pathak; Chairman Appt Corp Trading UK
Session IV: Theme: Legal and Marital Issues of Women of Indic Origin
Chaired by Mr. Vijay Sharma, Legal Advisor- GOPIO. Speakers included: Priya Hingorani Advocate, Member- Legal Panel, Women & Child Development Ministry , India; Leela Maria-Goretti Ramdeen, Trinidad and UK; Pavit Mattewal, Additional Advocate General, Punjab, India and Seema Anand, Narratives expert, U.K.
Concluding Session: Theme: Ways and Solutions for Success
Chaired by Dr. Piyush Agarwal, GOPIO Regional Vice President, USA. Validictorian Address by H.H. Anandmurti Gurumaa, India and concluding remarks: Lady Shruti Rana, Convener. Dr Pushpinder Chowdhry delivered the vote of thanks.
Lady Rana summed up proceedings as 'a new beginning'. She acknowledged the value of the learning and experience shared by the speakers and invited all present, to remain connected, forge networks and to continue the discussions and problem-solving via the GIWC e-group, dialogues forums and practical projects.

GOPIO is a non-partisan, non-sectarian global organization with chapters in several countries, actively promoting the interests of people of Indian origin worldwide by monitoring and addressing current critical issues of concern, and by enhancing cooperation and communication between groups of Indians living in various countries.
GOPIO Individual Life membership is open to all who believe in the mission of GOPIO. The one- time fee is $5,000 for Platinum Life Membership, $2,500 for Gold Life Membership and $1,500 Silver Life Membership and half the amount for each category for those from developing countries and India.
GOPIO is looking forward to opening chapters in all major cities of the world so as to network people of Indian origin all over the world.
