NATIONLA FEDERATION OF INDIAN AMERICAN ASSOCIATIONS CONVENTION 2012 


The National Federation of Indian American Associations (NFIA), 
the umbrella organization representing various Indian American associations, will meet for its 17th biennial convention in Chicago  on the weekend of October  12-14, 2012. The NFIA delegates coming from all parts of the United States will gather in this city, after a long time which is a major hub of Indian American population. 

 

The convention will be held at the Holiday Inn (3405 Algonquin Road, Rolling Meadows, Illinois 60008) phone no 847 259 5000.  The NFIA delegates and many other guests will engage in discussing, deliberating and debating contemporary issues facing the Indian American community on October 13th. Several U.S lawmakers have been invited to participate in these deliberations. 

 

Since its inception in 1980, NFIA has held its biennial conventions in various cities of the United States, in order to mobilize and unify the local community. NFIA has been credited for many accomplishments, including its role in strengthening US-India relations, making US lawmakers aware of issues of concern to the community, and presenting testimony on the interests of India before the US Congress. 
 
The National Federation since inception has recognized and presented awards to outstanding achievers in the community at their gala banquet. This time also, the NFIA will honor those achievers and those providing community services.

NFIA to Honor Six Individuals and Three Institutions for their Outstanding Contributions at its Convention

 

In keeping with the long tradition established seventeen years ago, the National Federation of Indian American Associations (NFIA), an umbrella organization of various Indian American organizations, once again, will honor six individuals and three organizations for their exemplary contributions to the welfare of the community.  These awards will be presented to the recipients on the Gala Banquet on October 13, 2012 in Chicago, in conjunction with the 17 the Biennial Convention of the organization. The names were recommended by an award committee headed by Haresh Panchal, past president of NFIA.

 

"We are indeed delighted to honor these recipients for their valuable service to their profession and their contributions to Indian American community," noted Lal Motwani President of NFIA. 

 

Among the individuals receiving these awards are Harkrishana Majumdar and Dr. Najma Sultana for their involvement in community service; Nitin Shah in the field of hospitality and financing; Sid Gautam for promoting entrepreneurship; Rathna Kumar for her excellence in performing arts and Dr. Hemant Patel for his service to medicine and organizational leadership. In addition to these individuals, three organizations namely Sahara TV, India Abroad, and Indo-American Center of Chicago will also be recognized for their exemplary achievements. A special NFIA Convention Convenor's Award will be presented to Ms. Hemalata Potla, owner of Hema's Kitchen for her support to the community.

 

A person of boundless energy and desirous of always helping others, 92 year old Harkrishana Majumdar has made an outstanding contribution to the welfare of the elderly in the Indo-American community in Bay area. He has pleaded, pro bono, the cases of many senior citizens. Dr. Najma Sultana, an ardent Indian American activist and a feminist, was a chief guest at historical " Qawateenay Baydri"  women's Education awareness caravan, by Bihar Rabta committee which significantly improve girls literacy in Bihar. This psychiatrist believes that nations, must resolve their political differences, as per Mahathma Gandhi's principle of non- violence and peaceful political negotiation.

 

Majumdar and Sultana are recipients of community service awards.

 

Dr. Sid Gautam has served as the chairman in the Department of Economics and Business Administration and Director of the Center for Entrepreneurship at Reeves School of Business at Methodist University, Fayetteville, North Carolina for the last 20 years. He is a widely respected faculty member who has published over 200 articles, including a book, Happiness is You, and has promoted entrepreneurship all his life.

 

Hemant Patel is a physician practicing medicine in New Jersey. As past president of the American Association of Physicians from India (AAPI), Patel had great influence on Indo-US scientific, economic and political arena for the organization. He promoted legislative day on the Capital Hill, a women healthcare summit and many other activities.

 

For her excellence in dancing, Rathna Kumar, director, Anjali Center for Performing Arts in Houston who has given nearly 500 stage performances, will be recognized by the NFIA. She is proficient in the Bharatnatyam and Kuchipudi styles of Indian Classical dance.

Nitin Shah has built a robust business as hotelier and banker by using his good vision, passion and energy. He is one of the founders of the Asian American Hotel Owners Association (AAHOA) and served its chairman.

 

The NFIA will also honor three organizations, including the Indo-American Center, Rediff and India Abroad and Gen-I corporation that have contributed to the welfare of the Indian American community over many years.

 

The Indo-American Center is an organization that focuses on assisting South Asian immigrants as they adjust to life in the United States. Located in Chicago, the Center serves the often overlooked segment of the South Asian population of recently arrived, low income immigrants who come from families with limited English language skills and limited experience with the American life.

 

India Abroad is the oldest Indian American weekly, known for its excellence in print journalism and devotes its efforts to socially and politically motivate the community. Rajeev Bhambri is the COO of Rediff India Abroad who is deeply involved in philanthropic activities, both in the US as well as India, volunteering his time for the community members, especially senior citizens.

The CEO and president of GEN-I, Sudhir Vaishnav, a leading international distributor and content aggregator representing international television channels in the US, UK, and Canada will also be honored for his organization. The owns many premier channels like Sahara One, Filmay, Sahara  Samay and Radio City. Vaishnav is deeply involved in many philanthropic organizations doing good for the community.

 

"These are cream of the crop individuals and organization dedicated to the welfare of the Indian American community and I am glad to see the NFIA honor them," said Dr. Rajen Anand, Past President of NFIA "It always feels good to be recognized by your peers." 

       

The convention will be held at the Holiday Inn Rolling Meadows near Chicago.  The NFIA delegates and many other community activists will engage in discussing, deliberating and debating contemporary issues facing the Indian American community in nine conference sessions. These include Indian Americans making an impact in America, political participation, remembering pioneers especially Gadar heroes at the 100th Anniversary Celebration being hosted by GOPIO and other groups, social services to the community, senior citizens programs, tax related issues, youth and young professionals achieving success and India's development.
