GOPIO
organized the second global convention of people of Indian origin
in New Delhi from December 27 -31, 1993. It was attended by over
1,000 delegates from 35 countries. The convention was inaugurated
by th elate President Jagan Guyana. Presided over by Dr. Karan Singh,
keynote speeches were delivered by Dr. Najma Heptulla and Atal Bihari
Vajpai.
Six
conferences were organized at this convention on topics related
to sociological, economic, cultural and political challenges confronting
PIOs. A special Technology Trends seminar ran concurrently. A book
titled, "Indian Diaspora - Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow,"
edited by Drs. Jagat Motwani, Jyoti Barot-Motwani and Mahin Gosine
was released at the inauguration ceremony by President Jagan.
The
major outcome of the convention was the adoption of a constitution
by GOPIO and election of its office bearers. Dr. Thomas Abraham
(USA), was elected unanimously as its President and Ram Lakhina
(Netherlands) was elected as the Chairman of GOPIO. Prof. Ved Nanda
was been elected again as Chairman of the International Human Rights
Commission of GOPIO.
